Jurgen Klopp praises Harvey Elliott for impressive midfield performance

Jurgen Klopp has praised Harvey Elliott after the youngster was deployed in midfield during Liverpool’s pre-season friendly against Athletic Club.

Elliott has enjoyed plenty of game time in recent weeks, building upon an extremely impressive loan spell at Blackburn Rovers last season. During his time at Ewood Park he made 42 appearances, registering seven goals and 11 assists, as well as dazzling fans with his skill and trickery.

Elliott was handed a start for Liverpool’s penultimate pre-season match on Sunday, which ended 1-1, and Klopp was extremely pleased with what he saw, particularly as he does not normally play in midfield.

“He can play the position and how you saw then a little bit later when he went up front, Mo went in the centre and Harvey played then the right wing. He smashed the ball on the crossbar in that moment,” he told the club’s website.

“He can play different positions, there’s absolutely no doubt about it. But in the pre-season we wanted to see him just in a deeper role because for a young player you have to learn a lot of things when you are a bit more outside and you get the ball from time to time. We wanted to have him more involved.

“And I think he made a big step in this pre-season. If Harvey stays fit then the football world can be really excited about that. I liked his performance today, I liked his performance and attitude during the pre-season. So, good for us, good for him.”

There have been rumours linking Elliott with a loan move but if he continues to put in performances of this quality, the Reds will keep him around this season. He may even have a future in midfield with the Reds still looking for a Georginio Wijnaldum replacement.

Klopp intimated as much as he outlined Liverpool’s plans for the remainder of the transfer window: “We have a new midfielder in our squad in Harvey Elliott. We have players who can make a big step. We are not blind. We see what others are doing. We just have to be able to beat them. We will try to do that,” he added.
