Keylor Navas hints at unhappiness with Paris Saint-Germain rotation role

Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Keylor Navas has admitted his “situation has to change” at the club after sharing first-team responsibilities with Gianluigi Donnarumma this season.

Before the Italian’s arrival at the French capital, Navas was PSG’s undisputed number one goalkeeper. However, things took a turn for the Costa Rican when the Euro 2020 winner joined the club from Milan last summer.

Donnarumma is seen as the club’s long-term first-choice but minutes have been split this term – a squad role which Navas admitted to Canal+ is “complicated”.

Navas has made 18 Ligue 1 appearances for PSG this season, conceding 15 goals and keeping eight clean sheets – the latest of which came in a 3-0 win at Angers on Wednesday. Donnarumma, meanwhile, has played in the other 15 league games and more frequently in the Champions League.

Speaking on his situation, Navas said: “I’m happy in Paris, I have a good relationship with Donnarumma but I want to play all the games – the same situation like this season [in future] would be complicated. The situation has to change.”

Manager Mauricio Pochettino also spoke on the sharing of the roles, saying: “It’s a long season with a specific situation. I don’t think there’s any other club in the world in the same situation; with two number one goalkeepers at this level. The cohabitation and competition between the two have been good.

“The future will be different, the management will definitely be different. Whether that’s Keylor or Gigio, both would have liked to play more.”

PSG can wrap up the Ligue 1 title with a point in their next game at home to Lens.
