UFC Russian fighter intent on retirement
Despite currently being the UFC lightweight champion, Khabib Nurmagomedov‘s future is unclear in the sport, and he has somewhat opened the door to vacating his title to Dustin Poirier.
It’s said that had Conor McGregor beaten Poirier in his own UFC return, there would have been a rematch between the Irishman and Khabib, but that went up in smoke once Poirier knocked McGregor out in round two of their bout.
During an interview with Match TV, Khabib admitted that UFC president Dana White will be the one to announce his next step, despite ongoing negotiations between the pair.
“Dana is an honest person and we always have had an honest relationship,” Khabib confirmed.
“I think he will relay to the media the message I sent him a week ago.
“It’s not a secret, I just told him how I would like things to develop moving forward, not only in relation to myself but also the lightweight division.”
With it likely that the lightweight belt will be contested in May, Khabib admitted that he believes Poirier would be a deserving champion.
“Poirier deserves to be champion, that’s my personal opinion,” he added.
“Just look at who he has fought against.
“The lightweight division has always been the most competitive, with the biggest stars, and I think intrigue will grow in the division as soon as they decide who will fight for the title.”
