McGregor vs Poirier | UFC 257 Posted an inflammatory tweet about the Irishman
It didn’t take Khabib Nurmagomedov long to rub in the salt in the wounds of Conor McGregor after the Irishman’s defeat to Dustin Poirier in the first knock-out of his career.
The Dagestan fighter criticised the way the Irishman had prepared for the fight.
“This is what happens when you change team, you leave the sparring partners who made you a champion and spar with little kids, far away from reality”, said Khabib on Twitter.
Khabib, who is still the featherweight champion despite announcing his retirement, was watching the fight closely after McGregor had publicly challenged him before his fight with Poirier.
“I’ll get the championship,” said McGregor.
“If he continues to avoid fighting, then he should be stripped of the title. I’m not going to chase it if he doesn’t want it. And that’s it.
“I’ll keep my calm and move on, but the world knows this fight is not over”.
Khabib was much more complimentary when talking about UFC top dog Dana White, who is trying to convince him to get back in the octagon.
“You can like him or hate him, but you have to respect him,” wrote Khabib on Twitter.
“This guy built this sport.
“Thank you for everything Dana White. I have so much respect for you”.
It remains to be seen whether this fight has motivated Khabib to come out of retirement. We’ll see if Dana White’s power of persuasion is stronger than the promise he made to his mother to step away from the octagon.
