FC Barcelona – La Liga Defended his players after Sevilla defeat
In an important game at Sevilla, the first leg in the Copa del Rey semi-finals, Barcelona fell to a 2-0 loss on Wednesday evening. It was a delicate night for the Catalans, and coach Ronald Koeman came out to defend his players afterwards.
The Dutchman anticipated criticism of his players, and he expects more in the coming days, but he has changed his approach of being hard with those working under him to being protective.
Sincerity is something that Koeman has always had. He was critical of his players himself earlier in the season, but after the loss at Sevilla he praised their creativity on the night.
Koeman has bemoaned his players’ attitude at times this term, but he was “impressed” by it on Wednesday evening.
Individually, the coach has never been shy of pointing fingers. He previously accused Ousmane Dembele of not being committed defensively, he suggested that Pedri and Riqui Puig should find a loan move elsewhere, he complained about Antoine Griezmann‘s lack of ruthlessness, and he demanded more from Frenkie de Jong.
In Seville, Koeman leapt to the defence of Samuel Umtiti.
“It’s not fair to go after Umtiti,” he said.
Following his compatriot’s approach Koeman has changed his approach at Barcelona, and it could strengthen the unity in the dressing room.
