Barcelona The coach spoke ahead of the Elche match
Ronald Koeman expressed frustration at the two penalties that Barcelona missed against Cornella on Thursday and discussed this some more on Saturday as he previewed the trip to take on Elche in LaLiga Santander.
The Dutchman wants his side to be more clinical from the spot and in general.
“If we look at the penalties, we’ve taken 12 this season and missed seven if we include the Supercopa shootout,” he said.
“That’s a lot, too much.
“If Lionel Messi isn’t there, who is our number one taker, then we need someone else to take them.
“We worked on this yesterday and today.
“We can’t accept the situation, something must change.
“We’ll decide [Sunday’s penalty taker] in the pre-match talk.
“We’ll pick two players, but the final decision will be in the hands of the captain.”
Koeman went on to discuss that game at Elche in more depth, a match where Messi will serve the second part of this two-match ban.
“There are no easy games and we know we have a busy schedule,” he said.
“Also, we just played three periods of extra time.
“We’ve had many trips away and games at 21:00, but at least this one is in the afternoon.
“I’ll pick a lively team with a strong mentality.
“We’ll need to recover certain players because we need freshness.
“Sergi Roberto has returned to training, but he still needs time. He’ll be back on the lists soon.
“We hope we won’t have any more important injuries.”
Luis Suarez was also brought up in the press conference, with the player that Koeman shipped off to Atletico Madrid in the summer now the joint-top scorer of LaLiga Santander
“I don’t like to answer these questions,” the coach replied.
“He’s a great player, but we took the decision that we took.
“If you ask me every time he scores…”
