FC Barcelona – La Liga Met with Laporta, Font and Freixa
Ronald Koeman attended a meeting between the three Barcelona presidential candidates and the club’s president of the Economic Strategy Committee Carles Tusquets to request the imminent signing of Manchester City‘s centre-back Eric Garcia.
However, the Dutcman did not manage to convince Joan Laporta, Victor Font and Toni Freixa and Garcia is expected to join the Blaugrana on a free transfer this summer when his current deal with the Sky Blues comes to an end.
The aforementioned meeting was called to assess Tusquets’ request to move the elections one week forward.
His request came after the Catalan government decided to allow voting by mail amidst strict mobility restrictions due to COVID-19 in the region.
However, the candidates turned down Tusquets’ request and the elections will take place on March 7.
Koeman‘s presence was not expected in the meeting but the Dutchman was willing to break down the reasons why he needs to strengthen his defence with Garcia‘s signing in January.
As MARCA reported, in previous meetings, Tusquets asked and was denied the permission by the three candidates to make an offer of four million euros plus another four million euros in variables to sign Garcia this month.
Font has been in favour of Garcia’s imminent move, yet neither Freixa nor Laporta believe that such a signing would be necessary for the time being.
“I have always said that I am not the one who has to take economic decisions for a signing,” Koeman told the press conference ahead of Barcelona’s Copa del Rey game against Cornella on Thursday.
“If the club think that it is not possible, then it is not possible and we will continue with what we have.”
