Kylian Mbappe: Talks with Emmanuel Macron ‘a factor’ in decision to stay at PSG

Kylian Mbappe has revealed a conversation with French president Emmanuel Macron contributed to his decision to reject Real Madrid and sign a new contract at Paris Saint-Germain.

The forward had been widely expected to join Los Blancos on a free transfer this summer upon the expiry of his deal at Parc des Princes.

However, Mbappe stunned the football world on Saturday by putting pen to paper on an extension in the French capital instead. If he sees it out, the 23-year-old will remain with PSG until 2025.

The new agreement is worth around £1m per week and Mbappe pocketed an astronomical signing-on fee of around £100m.

Speaking at a press conference on Monday, the France international revealed he had spoken to President Macron about his decision, but denied that the politician had influenced his decision to stay in Paris.

“I informed him of my choice,” Mbappe told BFMTV. “He said he was very happy and that it was great news for the country.”

Asked whether Macron has convinced him to stay, the striker added: “We talked [previously], it was good advice. If it counted? No because there wasn’t just one call! I have a lot of respect for him, but I didn’t make my decision because he told me to stay. But it was a factor among others.”

Speaking to Le Parisien, he added: “I didn’t say no to Real Madrid. I said yes to France and PSG. I had the call of the homeland and of the capital city. It was too early to leave on a free.”
