Brooklyn Nets point guard Kyrie Irving is in hot water after missing four straight games without a solid explanation, and the emergence of videos showing his presence at a large gathering without a mask on has raised a lot of questions.
If the NBA find that the party took place in recent weeks, as suspected, Irving could be fined for every game missed for breaking health and safety protocols.
The 28-year-old could lose a proportional part of his annual salary for every game missed if he is found to be absent from duty owing to a disciplinary breach rather than alleged “personal reasons”.
That would mean the six-time All-Star could lose 410,000 dollars per game missed, which could lead to a total of 2.5 million dollars if he remains out for the Nets’ two upcoming games against the New York Knicks and the Orlando Magic.
The incriminating video circulating on social media shows a party without social distancing, believed to be celebrating Irving‘s sister’s 30th birthday as she appears in the video blowing out candles on a cake. Both she and Irving’s father had birthdays this week.
Videos have surfaced of Kyrie Irving at a large birthday gathering alongside his sister, Asia.

The Nets have issued a statement acknowledging their awareness of the video.
“Kyrie will have the opportunity to address his absence when he is ready to do so,” said the Nets.
