Barcelona presidential candidate Joan Laporta has revealed that if the club have the finances available this summer to make some additions to the squad, he has some moves already lined up.

This is obviously dependent on Laporta becoming president after the election on March 15, as he will have to gain more votes than Victor Font and Toni Freixa.

“I have all the cards ready to deal with these situations,” Laporta said.

“It’s because of the experience and the knowledge I have of the people who could intervene in all these situations. I want to send a message of calm to the Barcelona fans.

“We will be economically sustainable again and if we need to improve the sports teams, I have all the cards ready to be played.”

Barcelona‘s financial state has been much discussed, given their debt of 1.173 billion euros, but the 58-year-old is calm.

“I am convinced that the club will be financially sound in the short term,” Laporta confirmed.

Laporta, who was previously Barcelona president between 2003 and 2010, is clear that he wants Lionel Messi to stay beyond the end of his contract this summer, but he also accepts that he will have some very lucrative offers on the table from elsewhere.

“I remain determined to convince Leo to stay at the club,” he stated.

“The competitors are state clubs and they have their own way of getting around Financial Fair Play.

“He will receive big offers and it is difficult to compete with that, but I will try to convince him.”

The lawyer also revealed that, following Barcelona’s humbling 4-1 defeat at home to Paris Saint-Germain in the last 16 of the Champions League, he spoke to a player in the dressing room. Without naming him, his description of the player matches that of Gerard Pique.

“I spoke to a first-team player after the game. He was down, but he was the one who set an example by wanting to play after coming back from injury,” Laporta said.

“I have already made reference to a conversation with a person with whom I have a very good relationship, and I only said that he was down, but let me keep the rest of the conversation to myself and just tell you that we are not going to leave them alone.”
