Leeds United stepped up to the plate in a big way last night as they fought Manchester City tooth and nail to a 1-1 draw at Elland Road. The battle of Bielsa vs Guardiola was considered to be the biggest storyline heading into the game, and what we got was an encounter that went far beyond the two managers.
It came down to two teams full of players who were willing to do whatever it took for the badge on their shirt. With minimal VAR interference and some fantastic free-flowing football to go alongside it, this was the match we’d all been hoping we would see.
Today, we’re going to take a look at a few things we’ve come to learn in the aftermath of their meeting in Yorkshire.
Striker needed for City?
Sterling and Aguero will continue to be the kind of forward-thinking players that are always going to cause problems for Manchester City’s opponents. However, what we’ve come to learn thanks to this performance is that City are in desperate need of a new striker. It may not seem like that should be their main priority given their defensive woes in recent times, but they need to be able to kill teams off like they have done in years gone by under Guardiola.
Leeds’ fantastic style
When teams come up from the Championship you often expect them to be quite conservative, but that simply isn’t the case with Leeds United. They come forward with real intent and they battle like no other promoted side has battled before. They probably aren’t going to be in the mix for the top six and they may not even break into the top ten, but with a style like theirs, you can bet they will continue to serve as one of the Premier League’s most exhilarating teams this season.
Big tests ahead for both
The international break is upon us but after that, Leeds will face a tough task when they lock horns with Wolverhampton Wanderers. On the flip side, Manchester City will take on an Arsenal side that are currently five points above them in the Premier League. They’re priced as the 2/5 favourites to win the game with 888sport which won’t come as much of a surprise, but if they aren’t careful, they could drop more points which will open the door up for Liverpool to take another big lead in the title race.
