It appears as though the endless streams of cash poured into Paris Saint-Germain over the years are not only unable to land the Champions League but, this season, has not even been enough to win Ligue 1.
Lille were crowned champions of France on Sunday with a 2-1 win away at Angers, sealing their first title in ten years and making it just the second time in nine years in which PSG failed to win the title.
To put into perspective the magnitude failure of Mauricio Pochettino‘s team, the entire Lille squad at the start of the season had a combined value of 239.05 million euros, while PSG forwards Kylian Mbappe and Neymar were valued at 270 million euros, according to Transfermarkt.
As the 2020/21 season progressed, the value of the eventual French champions’ squad increased, reaching 297m euros, with stars like Jonathan Ikone and Jonathan David being quoted to command fees of 30m euros.
In comparison, PSG have as many as seven players with a market value of 30m euros or more: Moise Kean (35m), Presnel Kimpembe (40m), Mauro Icardi (55m), Marco Verratti (60m), Marquinhos (70m), Neymar (110m) and Kylian Mbappe (160m).
