Lionel Messi opens talks with Paris Saint-Germain after leaving Barcelona

Lionel Messi has made contact with Paris Saint-Germain manager Mauricio Pochettino after his departure from Barcelona was confirmed.

Messi is currently a free agent and he was expected to pen fresh terms with Barcelona, but remaining at the Camp Nou is now impossible. The two parties had reached an agreement some time ago, but La Pulga has been prevented from signing the contract by La Liga due to “financial and structural obstacles”.

With remaining at Barça no longer an option, Messi has now been forced to find a new club with the 2021/22 season just days away. Their are only a handful of sides that could feasibly sign the forward, with PSG now the most likely to get the deal done.

Messi himself has already got the wheels in motion, the Athletic report, contacting his compatriot Pochettino on Thursday evening. This triggered further discussions between the two parties and it is understood that PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi is now leading the talks.

The club have concerns about being able to afford Messi’s wages, though. They have already spent big on the likes of Sergio Ramos, Georginio Wijnaldum, Gianluigi Donnarumma and Achraf Hakimi recently and have another summer of heavy spending pencilled in for next year.

However, PSG are seriously considering a deal for Messi, exploring the commercial benefits that signing him could bring. By Friday morning, the club had reached the conclusion that a move could be feasible.

Meanwhile, Manchester City – who have made two approaches for Messi in the past – are unlikely to enter the race. They have just spent a British record £100m on Jack Grealish and also want to sign Harry Kane.

A move to MLS is slightly more likely. The designated player rule and his high wages means Messi’s potential destinations are few, although he could be offered a stake in a team as makeweight in his contract.
