Lionel Messi’s move to PSG edges closer with medical scheduled

Lionel Messi is expected to arrive in Paris on Sunday and will undergo a medical at PSG by Monday at the latest following his emotional departure from Barcelona.

Barça were unable to shift enough cash to re-sign their talisman, and their fiscal irresponsibility has resulted in Messi confirming his departure from the club. The club have blamed La Liga for the financial constraints supposedly placed upon them.

Messi has therefore been on the lookout for a new club. PSG were immediately the most heavily linked side, though Manchester City and even Chelsea were touted as potential destinations, but now the move to the Ligue 1 giants is gathering pace.

According to L’Equipe, Messi is expected to undergo medical tests on Sunday evening or early on Monday morning. The details of his contract are also almost finalised – it is thought the Argentina legend will earn £34m a year after tax at Parc des Princes over a three-year contract. That would make his PSG’s highest earner, getting £4m more than Neymar.

Messi held a press conference confirming his departure from Barça on Sunday, though remained coy on a potential move to France.

He said: “Honestly, that’s a possibility at the minute. I’ve got nothing confirmed with anybody. When the press release was published I had a lot of calls from a lot of interested clubs. At the minute, nothing is closed but we are talking about a lot of things.”

The 34-year-old was visibly upset during his farewell conference, but football waits for no player and he will soon board a plane to jet across Europe over to Paris to put the final touches on his contract and be confirmed as a PSG player.
