Aston Villa 1 -4 Liverpool Champions on the ropes for an hour
A spirited performance from Aston Villa‘s youngsters wasn’t enough to avoid defeat as they fell 4-1 at the hands of Liverpool in Friday night’s FA Cup match.
A COVID-19 outbreak in the Villa squad saw them field their reserves against Jurgen Klopp‘s side, and the average age of their starting XI was just 18 years and 294 days
Things started well for the Reds and the game’s least surprising even came as they got themselves ahead inside four minutes. Curtis Jones got down the right win to cross and Sadio Mane was on hand to finish.
After a few more minutes of dominance, complacency appeared to creep into the Premier League champions and they were made to pay in the final minutes of the first half. A pretty straightforward and direct move saw Callum Miles Rowe put 17-year-old Louie Barry, formerly of Barcelona, through to level with a tidy finish.
It was starting to look as though it just wasn’t going to be Liverpool’s night when they saw a Mohamed Salah effort ruled out, but on the hour mark things started going their way again as Georginio Wijnaldum restored their lead.
Mane grabbed his second just three minutes later, heading home a Xherdan Shaqiri cross, and Salah then scored their third in five minutes, again from a Shaqiri assist.
