Luka Modric & Marcelo test positive for Covid-19

Real Madrid have confirmed that both Luka Modric and Marcelo have tested positive for coronavirus.

This rules the pair out of Los Blancos’ upcoming La Liga clash with Cadiz on Sunday, and likely Real’s trip to Athletic Club on Wednesday 22 December.

Losing Modric is the bigger blow, as he continues to be a near ever-present for Carlo Ancelotti’s side.

The Croatian has featured 12 times in the league this season, registering four assists, and has also not missed a single Champions League game, helping Real progress to the round of 16 as group winners.

Modric seems likely to be replaced in the starting XI by Federico Valverde who came off the substitutes bench during his side’s Madrid derby victory on Sunday night.

Meanwhile, Marcelo has barely played this term, enjoying just five outings in all competitions. The Brazilian is widely expected to depart Santiago Bernabeu in the the summer with hometown club Fluminense looking set to sign him on a free transfer.

Modric has also been linked with a move away from the club in recent times. The midfielder’s current deal is set to expire at the end of the season and contract talks are yet to bare fruit.

There has been suggestions that Modric may be let go as the club gear up for a summer of heavy spending. Kylian Mbappe is Real’s priority but Erling Haaland, Antonio Rudiger and Paul Pogba could all be targeted as well.
