Manchester City will take a 3-0 advantage into the second leg of their Champions League last 16 tie against Fiorentina following a comfortable victory at the Academy Stadium on Wednesday evening.
City raced into a 2-0 lead inside the first four minutes, Chloe Kelly crossing for Lauren Hemp to head the hosts ahead, before the England winger turned provider for Ellen White to power home from close range.
It looked as if the floodgates would open, but Fiorentina sured up at the back and for all their domination in possession, City struggled to break the Italian side down.
However, the visitors rarely threatened themselves, Frederikke Thogersen dragging their only opportunity wide in the second half.
City added a third three minutes from time, Sam Mewis powering home a header from another Kelly cross.
Let’s get into some player ratings.
Ellie Roebuck (GK) – 6/10 – Didn’t have a save to make as Fiorentina created just one, off target clear cut chance.
Lucy Bronze (RB) – 6/10 – Didn’t maraud forward as much as usual, often tucking inside and allowing Kelly to drive to the byline instead. Typically energetic and tough tackling.
Steph Houghton (CB) – 6/10 – Triggered a number of City attacks with her trademark cross field diagonal and a couple of clever through balls through the Fiorentina midfield. Almost netted a third for City, but her free kick drifted just wide.
Abby Dahlkemper (CB) – 6/10 – Hardly tested defensively as City spent much of the game camped in Fiorentina’s half. Kept the ball well, replaced after an hour.
Alex Greenwood (LB) – 6/10 – Didn’t get forward as much as normal, preferring to sit slightly deeper and feed Hemp. Caused problems with her set piece delivery, moved to centre back following the introduction of Morgan on the hour mark.
Laura Coombs (CM) – 7/10 – Playing in a slightly deeper role, got on the ball frequently and tidy in possession as she kept City ticking over.
Caroline Weir (CM) – 7/10 – Sent Hemp away with a perfectly weighted through ball in the buildup to City’s second. Hardly gave the ball away, replaced after an hour.
Georgia Stanway (CM) – 6/10 – Back into the team after missing out against Birmingham. Threw herself into tackles and tried her luck from range on a couple of occasions. Drove forward and picked out Kelly in the build up to City’s third.
Chloe Kelly (RW) – 8/10 – Beat her player and sent in a pinpoint cross for Hemp to head home City’s opener, before picking out Mewis for City’s third. An absolute nuisance with her darting runs and teasing deliveries.
Ellen White (ST) – 7/10 – Emphatically slammed home from close range to double City’s lead, a classic White finish.
Lauren Hemp (LW) – 8/10 – Headed home Kelly’s cross to open the scoring and turned provider two minutes later to set up White for City’s second. Replaced after an hour
Sam Mewis – 6/10 – Headed home City’s third from close range.
Esme Morgan – 6/10
Rose Lavelle – 6/10
