Manuel Neuer set to sign new Bayern Munich contract

Manuel Neuer is close to extending his Bayern Munich contract with his current deal set to expire in 2023.

The 35-year-old has been a mainstay of the Bayern first team for a decade and shows no signs of relinquishing the number one jersey in the near future.

Neuer has featured in all but one of his side’s Bundesliga games this season, and has also been ever-present in the UEFA Champions League.

He had been expected to face greater competition for his place when Alexander Nubel joined the club in 2020, but the former Schlake man has had to be patient so far.

According to Sky Sports Germany, the chances of Nubel – who is currently on loan at Monaco – displacing his senior counterpart in the side any time soon are slim, as Neuer is close to penning fresh terms with the club.

It is believed that Neuer could extend his stay in Bavaria until the end of the 2024/25 season, by which time he will be 38. Should that happen, Nubel will likely leave the club permanently in the summer with Bayern lining up Arminia Bielefeld’s Stefan Ortega as his replacement.

Neuer recently gave an update on his future during an interview with Sport1.

“Bayern is an outstanding club – we made history during my time here and we keep trying. Of course I want to be part of that,” he said after his side’s 4-0 away win of Koln on Saturday.

The victory maintained Bayern’s six-point cushion over Borussia Dortmund at the Bundesliga summit with Die Roten looking good for a historic tenth straight title.

They are one of the favourites in the Champions League too and face RB Salzburg in the round of 16 next month.
