Marcelo has never suffered so many defeats as a Real Madrid player as he has this season. The full-back, who is arguably the club’s greatest of all time, is suffering a curse in 2020/21 and that struck again at Alcoyano in midweek.

The Brazilian was back in the line-up for the first time since the game against Elche, another that ended in disappointment, but the situation in Alcoy was even worse. Real Madrid didn’t just draw, as they lost and were knocked out of the Copa del Rey.

On Wednesday, the goals didn’t come from his side of the pitch, but the fact remains. When Marcelo is on the pitch, Real Madrid lose a lot more often than when he isn’t.

Of the eight games he has started this season, Los Blancos have lost five, equating to 62.5 percent of his appearances. Considering that in his 13 seasons at the club, and in 477 appearances, he has lost just 77 – 16.1 percent – then his statistics this season are striking.

With Marcelo playing, Real Madrid haven’t won since beating Huesca on October 31. Their other win with him this season came in Matchday 2, in September, against Real Betis. Those games aside, they’ve drawn with Elche and lost to Cadiz, Shakhtar Donetsk,Alaves, Valencia and Alcoyano.

Having won 22 titles at the club, Marcelo is enduring his toughest time since joining. His position was under threat briefly under Santiago Solari, but Zinedine Zidane‘s return brought him back into the XI at first.

Now, even with a contract in place until June 2022, he looks unlikely to get back to his best and his future is very uncertain.

His defensive slip-ups are no longer outweighed by what he can contribute in attack, and his decline has been extraordinarily fast. That’s why Ferland Mendy is starting most matches.
