Marie-Antoinette Katoto suffers knee injury during France victory over Belgium

France’s victory over Belgium in their second Euro 2022 group match on Thursday evening was marred by an injury to instrumental forward Marie-Antoinette Katoto.

Katoto hobbled off after 15 minutes after planting her right foot in the penalty area, pulling up and clutching her right knee.

The forward had already taped her upper right leg prior to suffering the injury. She was later seen with an ice pack strapped to her knee on the substitutes bench, before emerging for the second half on crutches.

However, the injury was described as ‘not too serious’ by French TV at full time.

Katoto is already PSG’s all-time top scorer at the age of just 23 and is regarded as one of the favourites for the Euro 2022 golden boot. She has 26 goals in 32 appearances for her country, and got off the mark in France’s Euro 2022 opener against Italy, netting her side’s second in a thumping 5-1 victory.

France ran out 2-1 winners over Belgium in Katoto’s absence. Kadidiatou Diani gave her side the lead inside six minutes, before being pegged by by a Janice Cayman goal. Griedge Mbock Bathy nodded Les Bleus ahead once more on the stroke of half time.

Wendie Renard missed a penalty for France on the stroke of full time, but France’s one goal advantage was enough to see them to victory.

The result sees France qualify for the knockout stages as group winners. They face Iceland in their final group fixture at the New York Stadium on Monday, before returning to Rotherham for their quarter final tie against the Group C runner up on Saturday 23 July.
