Massimiliano Allegri addresses Miralem Pjanic transfer rumours & reveals new role for Aaron Ramsey

Aaron Ramsey’s Juventus career could be set to undergo an unlikely revival, after coach Massimiliano Allegri praised the Welshman for his performances as a holding midfielder in their most recent pre-season friendly.

The 30-year-old was thought to be out of I Bianconeri’s plans for the upcoming campaign, with rumours swirling of a possible return to Arsenal, or even a switch to the Gunners’ rivals, Tottenham Hotspur.

But Ramsey could well become a prominent figure in Juve’s side this season, after performing admirably as a defensive midfielder in a 2-1 victory over Monza on Saturday night. His display caught the eye of coach Allegri too, who lauded his star for his adaptability.

Allegri was originally asked whether the club were working on a deal to re-sign Barcelona flop Miralem Pjanic – a midfielder who regularly impressed in the position Ramsey occupied against Monza. The Juve coach used the time to instead hail ‘important player’ Ramsey, dismissing rumours of a move for the former Bosnian favourite.

“I don’t know about that,” Allegri told Mediaset.

“The club takes care of the transfer market, we talk every day. Ramsey played very, very well in front of the defence and I think in that role he can really become an important player.”

Allegri did eventually ‘salute’ Pjanic, with whom he spent four seasons in Turin. But he quickly returned to his appraisal of Ramsey, stressing that he can ‘do really well’ as a holding midfielder, if he can be ‘convinced’ to play there.

“I salute Mire, because we spent four years together with great victories. He is a Barcelona player now, we have talented players, and I think if Ramsey can be convinced to play in front of the defence, he can really do well there. He already can see passing channels, has a good sense of the geometry of the field and can also rest on the ball more than he does upfront.”

Pjanic is desperate to leave Camp Nou this summer, and if needed, he could even be willing to take a huge pay cut to make his move back to Juve. Like Barcelona however, I Bianconeri are looking to offload some stars this summer, with former Arsenal man Ramsey remaining one of the names firmly linked with an exit.
