Paul Pogba continues to be linked with a move back to his native France, as Mauricio Pochettino is said to have made the midfielder his ‘top target’ at Paris Saint-Germain.
Pochettino took over in Paris earlier this month, a development that sparked a wave of transfer stories – largely about players he knew from his time in England. Reports linking Dele Alli with a move to the French capital intensified, as did speculation surrounding Christian Eriksen, who looks set to leave Inter.
Pogba, meanwhile, has long been touted with a move away from United. Despite the recent revival that has established them as Premier League title contenders, unhelpful noises continue to emanate from his representative Mino Raiola, who seems determined to secure his client a move away.
Real Madrid and Juventus have also been heavily tipped to test United’s resolve, but a fresh report from the Daily Star claims Pogba is PSG’s ‘top target’.
The report describes Pogba as one of the ‘hottest properties on the football planet’ and goes on to say that Pochettino is confident of winning the race for his services, viewing Pogba as the ‘perfect player’ to build his team around.
Previous reports have suggested that United are resigned to losing him in the summer, since there has been no indication from the player that he will extend his contract, which expires in 2022. It seems unlikely, however, that the club will let him go in January – especially since he seems content to stay and fight for his place in the short-term.
Speaking after the League Cup semi-final defeat to Manchester City, Pogba expressed a determination to win trophies with United, and that’s something he may well do this season.
Pogba’s side are level on points with Liverpool at the top of the table, having played a game fewer, and will face their rivals twice in the next fortnight – at Anfield in the league, and at Old Trafford in the FA Cup fourth round in two weeks time.
