Sport can often throw up bizarre scenarios, and Formula 1 is no different, and there is nothing stranger than the defending World Champion being technically unemployed, although Mercedes have taken to social media to offer a nod in Lewis Hamilton‘s direction.
Negotiations over a contract extension between Hamilton and Mercedes have been both prolonged and problematic, with initial rumours suggesting the German team were only wiling to offer Hamilton an additional year, using George Russell‘s performance at the Sakhir GP as leverage to that end.
However, whilst Bernie Ecclestone has declared it all to be an act of theatre to keep Hamilton‘s names in the headlines, we may finally be getting close to a decision, if a cryptic tweet from the team’s official social media page is to be believed.
You never know when one of these might come in handy…

Mercedes tweeted a photo of a pen, notoriously known for use in contract signings, with the caption ‘You never know when one of these might come in handy’.
Fans have taken this to mean that Hamilton‘s signature on a new contract is likely to come in the immediate future, bringing to an end one of the more unusual sagas of the off-season in motorsport.
Hamilton has been keeping himself away from the limelight, spending his time off in the mountains skiing, although he did take time out to update fans on the contractual process.
“There is a lot of work going on behind the scenes, and there are a lot of things moving,” Hamilton declared.
