Real Madrid 2-0 Valencia Croatian brilliant again
Real Madrid‘s old guard came to the fore once again as they fended off Valencia at the Estadio Alfredo Di Stefano on Sunday.
Goals from Karim Benzema and Toni Kroos earned Los Blancos the three points, but it was another stellar performance from Luka Modric that caught the eye.
Dani Carvajal is the latest Real Madrid player to pick up an injury, just as he was returning from his latest spell on the treatment table. There were just 25 minutes on the clock when the defender’s hamstring started to play up, leaving everyone on the home bench looking fairly concerned.
After Zidane‘s comments about the fitness of his players earlier in the week, the focus is very much on the club’s medical staff at the moment. It’s now more than 40 injuries to boot this season.
At the age of 35, Modric continues to show he’s still at the peak of his powers, week in, week out. He didn’t stop scurrying around the Di Stefano pitch, playing passes, completing dribbles and making interceptions for his team.
Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Marcos Llorente are all contenders for player of the season in LaLiga Santander… but none of them have been as good as Modric.
Benzema was undeterred by the blow accidentally dealt out by Thierry Correia in the opening stages of the game, putting the hosts ahead with a sweet strike from the edge of the penalty area. It was the Frenchman’s 17th goal this season and 12th in LaLiga Santander.
Meetings between Real Madrid and Valencia used to be electric affairs, full of excitement and high-quality play. However, Valencia are not what they once were, and they did not leave a good impression of themselves at the Di Stefano.
