Supercopa de Espana | Barcelona vs Athletic Club Final decision will be on Sunday morning
Lionel Messi took part in full training on Saturday ahead of the Supercopa de Espana final between Barcelona and Athletic Club on Sunday.
The Blaugrana captain had felt a niggling injury during the recent LaLiga Santander victory over Granada but had continued to train with his teammates.
He was included in the squad to face Real Sociedad in the Supercopa semi final but pulled out after suffering from the same fitness problems ahead of the match.
After missing training on Thursday and trained on his own on Friday, it seems as though Messi is back in the fold on Saturday.
Whether he ends up playing in Sunday’s final remains to be seen and, if he doesn’t start the game, he could be fit enough to come off the bench.
“He’ll have the final say,” Koeman said ahead of training on Saturday on whether Messi will play.
“He knows his body. We have to wait and see how his niggles progress. We’re hopeful that he’ll play.
“If you have the best [players], you have a better chance of winning, and even more so if you have the best player in the world.
“The team is stronger with Leo in it, thanks to his creativity and efficiency – something that we sometimes lack. But if he’s not there, another [player] will play and we’ll play our game the same without him as with him.
“He has to be 100 percent. It’s not the final game of the season, though the decision is his.”
Barcelona are tentative towards risking Messi‘s fitness, especially with the upcoming Champions League tie with Paris Saint-Germain already on their minds.
