It was always going to be a special night for Lionel Messi as the Argentine drew level with Xavi Hernandez’s all-time record of 767 Barcelona appearances, and he celebrated it with a scintillating performance against Huesca.
Messi scored a breathtaking opener, after a brilliant touch took the ball away from the defender and rifled the ball into the back of the net off the crossbar. Then in the 90th minute put the finishing touch on a solid win.
Those two strikes mean Messi has 21 goals this season and has now bagged 20 or more goals for 13 consecutive seasons. In addition, he takes himself clear in the race for the Pichichi award.
Former teammate Luis Suarez is next up with 18 LaLiga Santander goals, Gerard Moreno and Karim Benzema complete the podium with 15 goals each. Messi has been particularly lethal in the last 10 matches, in which he has scored 14 times.
