Atletico Madrid Finally debuted after 36 days
In the 74th minute of Atletico Madrid’s home loss to Levante on Saturday, with the team losing 1-0, Moussa Dembele was called upon for the first time – 37 days after his loan from Lyon was confirmed.
He hadn’t played initially due to the need to adapt to Diego Simeone‘s system. While he was in the squad for the matches against Eibar, Valencia and Cadiz, he didn’t come on.
Then, because he contracted COVID-19, the French forward was missing for two weeks and for another three matches.
This is why his debut took so long to arrive, eventually coming as he replaced Koke to try to help Atleti‘s attack against impressive Levante goalkeeper Dani Cardenas. In the end, though, Los Rojiblancos lost the match 2-0.
In his 16 minutes, or 21 when including stoppage time, he had two shots, eight passes, one successful dribble, one defensive duel one, one defensive duel lost, one ball recovery and two offsides, according to LaLiga’s statistics.
He made a good impression, especially when considering how long he had gone without competitive action. It was back on December 19 that he played his last match, as his final days with Lyon were spent on the injury report with a fractured arm.
Two months had passed with Dembele on the sidelines, so it may take a little while longer for him to get up and running.
Atletico have paid 1.5 million euros for his loan until the end of the season and have an option to sign the 24-year-old permanently for 33.5m euros plus a potential 5m euros more in incentives. That’s according to Lyon.
