Atletico Madrid | Transfer Market Scored goals at Fulham, Celtic and Lyon
Atletico Madrid have found their replacement for Diego Costa. Los Rojiblancos are set to sign Lyon striker Moussa Dembele on loan for the rest of the season, with an option to buy in the summer.
The French international has experienced a journeyed playing career to date, taking in England, Scotland and France before making his way to Spain.
Having spent time in the Paris Saint-Germain academy, Dembele made his professional debut for Fulham at the age of 17, playing against West Ham United in the Premier League in 2013.
“He’s a little bit like a young Romelu Lukaku when he first went to Chelsea,” former Fulham coach Kit Symons told the Daily Record.
“He needs to be pushed a little bit, but he could go on to emulate what Lukaku is doing now. I believe that. If you look at his attributes as a player, he’s got everything that the top teams are looking for.”
During the 2015/16 season, the 24-year-old scored 15 goals in the Championship, attracting the interest of Celtic north of the border.
In Scotland, Dembele became the first Celtic player to score a hat-trick in the Old Firm derby against Rangers since Garry Good in the 1973/74 season.
“He’s physically powerful, better in a race, good in the air,” Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers said. “He’s a clinical and quality finisher.”
In 94 appearances for Celtic, Dembele scored 54 goals and won six major trophies. This form saw him earn a transfer to Lyon for 22 million euros in 2018.
“He’s a true No.9, a poacher, but not just that,” then-Lyon boss Bruno Genesio said.
“He’s able to win fouls from defenders and has already shown his ability to unsettle, run in behind and isolate defenders.
“You can use him in different systems, whether on his own up front or with another sticker.”
Dembele scored 44 goals in his first two seasons at Lyon but has managed just one goal in Ligue 1 in 16 appearances this campaign.
