Australia Open 2021 Shrugged off the incident
Rafael Nadal has jokingly referred to the abuse he received by a woman in the stands during his victory over Michael Mmoh at the Australian Open.
The spectator was ejected from the Rod Laver Arena and the Spaniard qualified to the third round of the tournament after beating Mmoh 6-1, 6-4, 6-2.
“I think she was drunk, maybe she had much gin or tequila,” Nadal said after the match.
“It was a strange and funny situation at the same time. I don’t understand why she did it, but there are people for everything in this world.
“I was surprised but at the same time I thought ‘poor girl’ because she was drunk or something like this.”
Nadal, who will face Cameron Norrie in the third round after the 25-year-old beat Roman Safiullin 3-6, 7-5, 6-3, 7-6(3), was content that he managed to beat Mmoh in three sets.
“It was good because I won in three sets,” said Nadal. “I’m still alive, I have a chance to continue improving and a test with Norrie awaits me.”
