USA After Wednesday’s events at the Capitol
On Thursday, house speaker Nancy Pelosi called upon vice president Mike Pence to invoke the 25th amendment to remove Donald Trump from power.
It came after violent scenes at the Capitol on Wednesday.
“I join the Senate Democratic leader in calling on the vice president to remove this president by immediately invoking the 25th amendment,” Pelosi said at a press conference.
“If the vice president and Cabinet do not act the Congress may be prepared to move forward with impeachment.”
Pelosi spoke of “armed insurrection”, backing president-elect Joe Biden‘s use of the term “domestic terrorists” to describe those who sieged the Capitol.
She also called on the chief of Capitol Police to resign due to a “lack of leadership” when protestors made their way into the building.
In order to remove Donald Trump from power through this measure, Cabinet would have to vote for the vice president to take his place.
It is usually saved for when a leader passes away, or less often, is removed from power.
