Newcastle and Arsenal reach Joe Willock agreement

Newcastle United and Arsenal have reached an agreement over a permanent transfer of Joe Willock, according to The Athletic. The story has since been confirmed by other media outlets as well.

The 21-year-old spent the second half of last season on loan with the Magpies and impressed in a box-to-box role at St. James Park, scoring eight goals in 14 appearances. Manager Steve Bruce spoke quickly about their intention to turn the deal permanent, though it obviously took a while for it to be agreed.

As for Arsenal, it was always clear that they would be willing to sell Willock, especially if a suitable bid, one of over £20 million for a player destined for no more than a squad role at the Emirates, came in. That has now happened (Sky Sports are saying £25m), and given that the Gunners have so far failed to sell any of the players in whom there was reported interest, it only made sense to accept as they strive to recoup some of the money they’ve invested in the team this summer.
