Newcastle in talks with Sevilla over Diego Carlos deal

Newcastle United are in talks with Sevilla over a deal for central defender Diego Carlos, 90min understands.

Having already signed Kieran Trippier from La Liga this month, the Magpies are now in talks with another player based in Spain.

In addition, they have approached the likes of Everton’s Lucas Digne, Freiburg’s Nico Schlotterbeck and Sven Botman of Lille recently, but those deals have stalled with the players not convinced by a move to Tyneside.

However, sources have confirmed to 90min that the Brazilian stopper seems to be open to the idea of a move to St James’ Park, or at least Newcastle believe he is.

They have seen an opening bid of £28m turned down by Sevilla though, with sporting director Monchi in talks with Carlos over a new contract.

Los Nervionenses, who are enjoying an excellent season and currently sit second in La Liga, face the prospect of losing their entire central defence in January as Chelsea are once again talking to them about Jules Kounde.

Kounde’s summer move could be agreed this month, but Newcastle’s intentions are to get Carlos now and they want the deal tied up before their next Premier League clash with Watford on 15 January.

The Magpies are ready to test Sevilla’s resolve to keep the player and are expected to up their approach to beyond £35m in the coming days.

Carlos’s current release clause is set at £65m and even Newcastle look unlikely to go to that extreme – but 90min understands that they may have to bid over £40m to get him.

Spanish sources have pointed out that one plus point to this early approach is that it does give Sevilla time to get a replacement signed, if needed.
