Neymar in constant contact with PSG over possible Lionel Messi move

Paris Saint-Germain forward Neymar has been in constant contact with president Nasser Al-Khelaifi and director Leonardo over a possible move for Lionel Messi this summer.

Messi had agreed a new five-year contract with Barcelona, but was officially released from Camp Nou on Thursday after the club confirmed they could not finalise his extension amid concerns over Financial Fair Play.

Since that announcement, PSG have been speaking with Messi over a possible transfer, with close friend Neymar understood to be a driving force behind the negotiations.

Neymar revealed back in December that he planned to play with Messi in the 2021/22 season, and sources have confirmed to 90min that the two players have been in contact over the summer to discuss the possibility of linking up in Paris.

A meeting was held between Al-Khelaifi, Leonardo and Neymar a few weeks ago, in which the Brazil winger stressed that a move for Messi was a genuine possibility, and he has not stopped speaking with those in charge at the Parc des Princes after Messi’s Barcelona exit was made official.

Messi’s interest in joining PSG is there, but Neymar has been pushing hard to convince his former Barcelona team-mate to make the move for a while now, and RMC Sport note that he has even offered to give up his number 10 shirt if Messi agrees to join.

The Argentine is understood to have rejected that offer, insisting that he would rather take up a new number if he did make the move to Paris in the coming weeks.

Al-Khelaifi and Leonardo are confident of getting a deal for Messi over the line, and Neymar is making sure that he is kept up to date with the negotiations from both sides, doing whatever he can to help facilitate things.

Messi had previously been linked with a move to Manchester City, but manager Pep Guardiola has confirmed that they will not be moving for the former Barcelona man after signing Jack Grealish for £100m.

Chelsea have since been named as suitors for Messi, but PSG are well ahead in the race for his signature.
