North Carolina Courage name Sean Nahas as permanent head coach

The North Carolina Courage have announced Sean Nahas as the team’s newest head coach following the Paul Riley scandal.

The NWSL side terminated the contract of former boss Riley in September after reports outlined allegations of sexual coercion and misconduct. An investigation by the league then took place and revealed several other wrongdoings by the coach and club.

Now, Nahas is set to take over ahead of the 2022 campaign. He has been with the club since 2017 and served as the interim figure since Riley’s departure.

Nahas was also the Director of the North Carolina Courage Girls Development Academy since 2004, playing an integral role in nurturing young talent. During his time the program was selected as one of the top eight in the country by Soccer Wire, and was also chosen as a Top 10 program to watch.

“We are excited for the future of the Courage with Sean at the helm. Sean is a player-first leader who aligns with our vision of providing the very best resources for our players to improve and reach their highest potential,”  North Carolina Courage owner Steve Malik said.

“We are confident he is the right person for the job considering the experience he brings, along with respect from the players and his long-term commitment to the club evidenced by his 18-year tenure. We are thankful for his stepping up this past season and look forward to his role in leading the club forward.”

Nahas is equally as excited to get started.

“To be asked to be the next Courage head coach, here in my hometown, and to work with these amazing women has made me both humbled and honored,” Nahas said.

Team captain Abby Erceg said Nahas had been an excellent sounding board for the players.

“I am excited for what the future holds and I thank Steve, Curt and all the players for trusting in me to help get our program back where we want to be. It’s exciting for us to have the opportunity to fully tap into his knowledge and have him drive us forward,” the New Zealand international said.
