Northern Ireland manager Ian Baraclough has claimed exciting times are ahead for Norwich’s Jamal Lewis, with the defender closing in on a potential move to Newcastle.

The Magpies are close to signing the left back after having a recent bid of £13.5m accepted by the Canaries. Lewis was also a target for last season’s Premier League champions Liverpool, but a rejected £12m bid saw the Reds go for Konstantinos Tsimikas instead.

NI manager Baraclough spoke to Sky Sports about Lewis’ potential return to England’s top flight, with a move to St James’ Park seemingly the key point of discussion between his international teammates.

He said: “Exciting times for him. There’s one or two who have been in the squad and have been talking about possibly moving onto other clubs.

“But for Jamal, it would be stepping back into the Premier League. We feel as though he’s a Premier League player. He has got all the attributes for that. He’s still learning in a lot of ways.

“If he was to complete a move to Newcastle then I think Steve Bruce will be a fantastic manager for him to give him more of an education and take him onto another level.

“What a club it would be to move to. The Newcastle fans, I am sure, would be pleased to see him flying up and down the left-hand side.”

Lewis made his mark during Norwich’s return to the Premier League last season. Despite the Canaries’ relegation, the Northern Ireland left back was one of the club’s star performers during the campaign, featuring in 28 top flight fixtures.
