FC Barcelona – La Liga Defensive problems exposed against PSG
It was thought that the return of Gerard Pique on Tuesday night against Paris Saint-Germain would help solve Barcelona‘s defensive problems. However, the defence once again made several mistakes, this time in a 4-1 home defeat to the perennial French champions. Every time they approached the Barcelona goal, they posed great danger.
Kylian Mbappe‘s first goal to level the game at 1-1 came via a defensive error, and if it wasn’t for Pedri‘s clever marking of Mauro Icardi in what was a dangerous PSG attack, things could have got a lot worse. The third goal came from a set piece – another of Barcelona‘s problems this season.
Even Marc-Andre ter Stegen, who is usually so reliable, made two errors in the game. However, the German goalkeeper made up for it with several crucial stops over the course of the 90 minutes.
It seemed that the return of the Catalan could be a turning point with regard to Barcelona‘s defensive frailties, not only because of his quality but also his leadership. But on Tuesday, Pique did not show either of these qualities. He looked slow and lacked rhythm in his play. The Catalans pushed to get Pique ready for the big occasion, but he was unable to finish the match.
The central defender returned almost three months after picking up an injury at the Estadio Wanda Metropolitano against Atletico Madrid. Sergino Dest also returned, leaving only Sergi Roberto and Ronald Araujo as the only defenders still on the sidelines.
