Omar Gonzalez signs for the New England Revolution through 2023

Free agent Omar Gonzalez is joining the reigning Supporters’ Shield winners, penning a contract with the New England Revolution through 2023.

Gonzalez spent the first six years of his professional career under Revs head coach and sporting director Bruce Arena with the LA Galaxy. He made the move to Liga MX in 2016, joining Pachuca prior to a loan with Atlas. The center-back finally made his return to MLS in 2019, signing with Toronto FC.

“Omar Gonzalez is a proven winner, with trophies in Mexico and the United States. His experience internationally brings a unique background to the Revolution,” Arena said in a club press release. “We anticipate that Omar will complement our current backline and help build this unit into one of the best in MLS. I look forward to again working with Omar and welcome him and his family to New England.”

Gonzalez is one of several players Arena coached at LA Galaxy to join the Revolution. The team traded for Sebastian Lletget earlier in the offseason, in addition to returning Ema Boateng and AJ DeLaGarza from last season’s team. DeLaGarza was a collegiate teammate of Gonzalez for the Maryland Terrapins, in addition to a professional teammate with the Galaxy.

The Dallas, Texas, native represented the United States Men’s National Team from 2010 through 2019, including a trip to the 2014 FIFA World Cup. Gonzalez started for Jurgen Klinsmann’s squad in Brazil in the USMNT’s final group match against Germany and their round-of-16 match against Belgium.

“I am really excited to join the Revolution and am grateful for the opportunity to reunite with Bruce Arena in New England. Together we enjoyed many successful years in Los Angeles and I am ready to compete for more championships alongside him and my new teammates,” Gonzalez said.

“The caliber and competitiveness of these players is what winning teams are made of. I’ve only heard amazing things about the locker room, which is a major draw for me. The Revs proved that they are a top club that wants to win. I can’t wait to get down to business and add some hardware to the club.”

The Revs begin their 2022 season on February 15th, 2022, in the CONCACAF Champions League against Cavaly AS in Léogâne Arrondissement, Haiti.
