Pedri lifts lid on his trial with Real Madrid

Barcelona prodigy Pedri has admitted that he wouldn’t have turned down a move to Real Madrid after being invited for a trial with Los Blancos when he was 15.

Pedri was playing junior football back home in Tenerife when he was spotted by Real and invited to the capital to train at Valdebebas.

Things didn’t work out for him on that occasion, heading home, before joining Las Palmas on neighbouring Gran Canaria and then being catapulted to superstardom upon moving to Barcelona. The youngster went on to play 52 games in his debut season, established himself as a key player for Spain, and recently became the latest recipient of the prestigious Golden Boy award.

He has now revealed that it could have been very different had Real made him an offer when they had the chance to because he would have accepted it.

“When I was 15-years-old they called me for a trial, but that day there was huge snowfall and it had to be postponed,” Pedri told Tuttosport.

“The next day, I took part in some light training with the academy side. Maybe they already had their idea about me, so I went back to Tenerife. However, I would not have rejected Madrid.

“Opportunities must be seized, however they come. Let’s just say something happened, a combination of negative circumstances, and they were the ones that didn’t want to sign me.”

After a breakout season with Barcelona, Pedri emerged as Spain’s star of Euro 2020 and then helped La Roja’s Under-23 team win a silver medal at the delayed 2020 Olympics. He then played 90 minutes for Barcelona only eight days after the Olympic final.

All of that football appears to have taken its toll. The 19-year-old has been out of action since September because of a thigh injury and has missed 18 games in all competitions.
