Barcelona 1-1 Cadiz Laments lost chance to cut gap
Gerard Pique spoke after Barcelona’s 1-1 draw with Cadiz at the Camp Nou and lamented his side’s inability to capitalise on the points dropped by Atletico Madrid this weekend.
The defender insists, however, that although it won’t be easy, Barcelona are still in the title race.
“It’s a tough one to take because Atletico’s loss gave us a chance and it was a game where [Cadiz] made problems for themselves, sitting so deep,” said Pique.
“We created quite a lot and had two goals ruled out. A penalty in the 90th minute, it’s hard to take.
“But considering where we came from [losing 4-1 at home to Paris Saint-Germain], the key thing mentally was to get another three points… but we’re still in it [the title race].”
The 34-year-old feels the coming weeks could be key as the Blaugrana enter now-or-never territory if they are to mount a serious title challenge.
“Every game you don’t win, your chances reduce a little,” said Pique.
“LaLiga is long distance and there’s a lot of ground left to cover. It’s not insurmountable, but it will depend on the coming games.
“If we get into a good rhythm, which lets us get good results, we could be in with a shout. It’s difficult, of course, but we have to give it a go.”
Pique also reflected on the fact that the outlook is bleak on all fronts for Barcelona this season, but while they may be relying on other results going their way, he insisted the key is to focus on themselves.
“If we’re being realistic, everything is tough, especially the Champions League. In the Copa [del Rey] we have a chance and LaLiga is as I said,” continued Pique.
“We need to get back to playing our way and feeling like ourselves because otherwise the other teams can go ahead and lose because we won’t catch them anyway.
“Despite the blows we need to keep our heads up, improve our spirits and go and beat Elche.”
The defender also mentioned that his own recovery from injury has gone well and he is glad to be back.
“I’m a bit tired but glad to be back so soon,” said Pique.
“The recovery went very well and little by little I’m getting my sharpness back.
“After so long out, I need to get up to speed and sharp and I hope to help the team from here to the end of the season.”
