Premier League confirm 103 positive Covid-19 results in latest round of testing

The Premier League have released results from the latest round of Covid-19 testing, revealing that there were 103 positive cases from 15,186 tests taken from 20 December to 26 December.

The league confirmed all 20 clubs have returned to emergency protocols in recent weeks, increasing testing of players and staff to daily lateral flow and twice-weekly PCR tests. Prior to the Omicron variant arriving in the UK, players and staff carried out lateral-flow testing twice a week.

Both the increase in testing and the new variant are behind the sharp increase in positive cases.

The Premier League’s other emergency protocols include being required to wear masks in doors, social distancing and limited treatment time.

“The safety of everyone is a priority and the Premier League is taking all precautionary steps in response to the impact of the Omicron variant of Covid-19,” they said in a statement.

“The league is continuing to work with clubs to keep people safe by helping mitigate the risks of Covid-19 within their squads.

“We are also liaising closely with the Government, local authorities and supporter groups, while being responsive to any future changes to national or local guidance.

“The Premier League is providing this aggregated information for the purposes of competition integrity and transparency.

“No specific details as to clubs or individuals will be provided by the League and results will be made public on a weekly basis.”

Wolves’ trip to Arsenal on December 28 is the latest to have been called off following a Covid outbreak in Bruno Lage’s squad.
