PSG confirm contract extension for Mauricio Pochettino

Paris Saint-Germain have confirmed they have triggered a one-year extension clause in the contract of manager Mauricio Pochettino.

The Argentine was heavily pursued by both Tottenham and Real Madrid this summer after a challenging first six months in Paris, but PSG were not interested in losing their boss and subtly extended his contract to give them some breathing room.

Here we are, a few months later, and confirmation of that one-year extension has now arrived, with PSG taking to their official website to confirm that every member of Pochettino’s staff has had their deal extended.

“I’m really very happy, for myself and also for my staff,” said Pochettino. “It’s very important for us to feel the confidence of the club and we will give our maximum so that the supporters are proud of Paris Saint-Germain. That’s why we will try and reach our objectives all together, as one.

“20 years ago I was captain of this club and today I am the coach…it’s a dream come true.”

Chairman Nasser Al-Khelaifi added: “We are delighted that Mauricio has reaffirmed his commitment to the Paris Saint-Germain family. Having also captained the team 20 years ago, he understands the club values, ambition and vision for the future. With Mauricio’s leadership, we’re excited and confident about what the future holds.”

After seeing his contract extended, Pochettino soon disappeared from the radar of both Real and Spurs, who eventually found themselves new managers from elsewhere. The former snapped up Carlo Ancelotti, and it was Nuno Espirito Santo for the latter.

For Pochettino, the lack of speculation means he can focus firmly on the task at hand in Paris, which is recovering the Ligue 1 title after losing out to Lille last season.

The boss did deliver success in both the Trophee des Champions and the Coupe de France, but unfortunately for Pochettino, those in charge have far greater expectations for their expensively assembled squad.

To try and reclaim Ligue 1 glory, PSG have gone in strongly in the transfer market. Sergio Ramos, Georginio Wijnaldum and Gianluigi Donnarumma have all joined on free transfers, and they have also parted with over £50m to land Achraf Hakimi from Inter.
