Ralf Rangnick keen for Man Utd to sign Timo Werner

Manchester United interim manager Ralf Rangnick is keen for the club to make a summer move for misfiring Chelsea forward Timo Werner.

The Red Devils boss has history with Werner, having signed him from Stuttgart during his time at RB Leipzig. Although Rangnick was sporting director for the majority of the pair’s time at the club, he did coach the Germany international during the 2018/19 season.

In that campaign Werner was in fine form, registering 19 goals and 13 assists in 38 appearances. The following season he was even better, netting 28 times in the Bundesliga alone and earning himself a move to Chelsea in the process.

However, since arriving at Stamford Bridge, his form has been shaky. Offside goals and poor misses have dominated his time in the capital with Werner managing 15 goals in 64 games so far.

According to Bild, Rangnick is keen to give his former player the chance to reignite his stagnating career at United. Details on the potential move are sparse at the time of writing but Rangnick’s strong relationship with Blues boss Thomas Tuchel may help things go smoothly.

As 90min reported back in September, Werner is open-minded about his Chelsea future. Although he is happy at the club, he is eager not to lose his place in the Germany team with the 2022 World Cup around the corner.

Werner has been linked with several top European clubs in recent times too. As well as United, Bayern Munich, Barcelona and Borussia Dortmund have been touted as possible destinations.

Werner is not the first player with Red Bull connections to be touted for a move to Rangnick’s new-look United. RB Leipzig midfielder Amadou Haidara has been linked too, as the German seeks to recruit players comfortable with his high-pressing style of football.
