Copa Libertadores Follows Cavani’s ban in England
Following Edinson Cavani’s ban in England for using a racial term, there has been further controversy in South America surrounding discriminatory terms.
The Manchester United forward was handed a three-match ban for using the term ‘negrito’ towards a friend on social media.
Boca Juniors striker Ramon Abila is the focus of an incident after swapping shirts with Santos forward Marinho following their Copa Libertadores tie.
“Marinha asked me for [the shirt], I swapped it with Marinha, with the ‘negro’ (black guy), who I know,” the Argentinian Abila told Globoesporte afterwards.
“Well… with the ‘oscuro’ (dark guy), because now you say ‘negro’ and they start to make complaints about you and all those things, you saw how it is [with Cavani].
“But it’s affectionate: if I say they’re ‘negro’, what’s left for the others, eh?”
