From a surprise factor to a symptom of the worrying lack of goals within the squad, Sergio Ramos‘ role as an emergency striker underlines the current structural shortcomings at Real Madrid, which haven’t appeared overnight and which aren’t part of Zinedine Zidane‘s tactics. It’s not the first time the French coach has used his captain as an improvised No.9. It’s almost as if he believes no one outside Valdebebas is aware of the defender’s strength in the air. It didn’t work against Athletic Club because the Basque side were well prepared. We’ve already said that this wasn’t a one-time thing.

Since Cristiano Ronaldo left two-and-a-half years ago, Real Madrid haven’t had a natural goalscorer. Karim Benzema’s efforts, which include the impressive figure of 70 goals since Cristiano departed, have simply disguised this problem at key moments. So much so that Los Blancos have lost the firepower that made them a feared side with the Portuguese star. This season, they’ve scored 1.6 goals on average per match, with their best total coming in the 4-1 win over Huesca. In the final season with CR7, they averaged almost a goal more per match and scored seven on one occasion – something unthinkable today.

The solution to this issue doesn’t solve the problem, because Benzema is not a poacher (he has a lot more in his locker but he’s no Robert Lewandowski), Luka Jovic has jumped ship for the Bundesliga having contributed only off-the-field headlines, and Mariano Diaz is little more than a last resort for Zidane. Ramos appears to be their best asset for when the chips are down; an asset that no longer surprises anyone and that also says very little about the resources of a squad whose production is now under question.
