Real Madrid – La Liga A mixed of options
The unfortunate injury to Sergio Ramos has left a void in the Real Madrid defence with only five suitable replacements to step in for the captain.
Zinedine Zidane needs to choose a new defensive leader for Real Madrid in the event that Ramos were to leave, and who could seamlessly enter the team and adapt to the situation.
The candidates are Raphael Varane, Eder Militao, Nacho, Victor Chust and David Alaba, the latter due to arrive in the summer.
Without Ramos, the natural choice to take charge of the defensive line is Raphael Varane, but without the current captain by his side, the Frenchman has experienced criticism for his performances.
The Frenchman has even had to defend himself publicly following errors that have cost the side. “I make Sergio Ramos better and he makes me better,” he once said.
However, in Huesca, Varane proved his doubters wrong with a great performance that also included a brace to see off LaLiga’s basement club.
Nacho has always been a sturdy backup option for Real Madrid in the past and will be the first candidate to partner Varane in the defence.
Nacho is one of the members of Madrid’s ‘old guard’ and is one of Zidane’s most loyal players.
The last two seasons haven’t been easy for Nacho, but the loss of Ramos could see him get another opportunity for Real Madrid.
Eder Militao is another option for Zidane following the absence of Ramos, and the Brazilian will want to make amends for his recent gaffs in his game. The red card against Levante was the latest error in the Brazilian’s spell at Real Madrid.
Awaiting news on a muscular injury he is carrying, Militao will certainly look to displace the likes of Nacho to partner Varane in the starting line-up.
The continuous injuries to Madrid’s defensive line have seen opportunities arise for the youth team player.
Chust captained the youth team to glory in the Youth League held last summer in Nyon and Zidane looks to count on him to give the side a boost when confidence is low.
The injury and the uncertain contract renewal of Ramos adds more importance to the arrival of David Alaba.
Real Madrid have already agreed terms with Alaba and the Austrian will sign for the next four years on a free transfer from Bayern Munich.
It is considered a strategic signing due to the number of defensive solutions that he would give to Real Madrid should Ramos not sign a renewal.
