Rangers extended their lead at the top of the Scottish Premiership table to 23 points with a convincing 5-0 victory over Ross County at Ibrox on Saturday afternoon.
Goals from Ryan Kent, Filip Helander, Joe Aribo, Ryan Jack and Connor Goldson saw Steven Gerrard’s side run out comfortable winners over the Staggies – who currently sit third bottom – as they edge closer to their first league title in 10 years.
The Gers took the lead inside six minutes, Alfredo Morelos diverting James Tavernier’s cross into the path of Ryan, who sent a looping header into the net.
The hosts were awarded a penalty six minutes later, but usual set piece expert Tavernier saw his surprisingly tame spot kick saved by Ross Laidlaw.
Kent could have had a first half hat-trick, clattering the woodwork either side of Tavernier’s missed penalty, but just before the half hour mark Rangers finally doubled their advantage. Helander rose highest from a corner and planted a towering header past Laidlaw.
Aribo gave Rangers a 3-0 halftime lead with a terrific solo effort, riding two challenges before curling an effort into the top corner from an acute angle.
County hit the woodwork twice in the opening exchanges of the second period, first through Harry Paton and then Alex Iacovitti, but from then on it was business as usual for Gerrard’s side. Just after the hour mark they had a fourth, Jack applying the finishing touches to a terrific team move to mark his return from injury.
Goldson added a fifth for Rangers nine minutes from time as he headed Borna Barisic’s corner into the bottom corner of the net to seal a routine three points for the Scottish Premiership leaders – the perfect way to celebrate Gerrard’s 150th game in charge.
Next up for Rangers is a trip to Hibernian on Wednesday evening.
