Real Madrid are said to be ‘confident’ of signing Paris Saint-Germain forward Kylian Mbappe next summer for around €180m, as long as the Frenchman doesn’t put pen to paper on a new deal.
The 21-year-old has been linked with a move to Madrid for well over a year, but the Spanish giants were unable to make a concrete move during the most recent transfer window due to the financial impact of the coronavirus pandemic.
Mbappe has continued to impress at the start of the 2020/21 season, with seven goals and seven assists to his name already after playing in just eight games.
PSG sporting director Leonardo recently confirmed that the Ligue 1 champions have opened talks with a number of key players – Neymar and Mbappe included – regarding new deals. With regards to Mbappe, his current contract is due to expire in 2022, and AS now report that Real Madrid’s pursuit of the forward has reached a crucial stage.
This is because PSG are stepping up their efforts to tie down one of the word’s best players to a new contract, meaning Real will also find out whether their strategy of waiting to make a proper move in the summer of 2021 will have worked in their favour or not.
AS claim that Mbappe has, in fact, rejected three offers to extend his stay in Paris. But should he not put pen to paper on a new deal, Los Blancos will be in a strong position to make a move for him – are are ‘confident’ they will be able to land Mbappe for the ‘reasonable’ price of around €180m in 2021.

The report does go on to state that there is still the possibility of Mbappe signing a new contract in Paris, albeit with a Real Madrid specific release clause. This wouldn’t necessarily suit Los Blancos, as the price would undoubtedly be higher than the fee they will need to pay next year – owing to the fact that Mbappe’s contract expires in 2022.
