Real Madrid Femenino were able to celebrate a win at Valdebebas again as they beat Athletic Club in LaLiga Iberdrola on Sunday, picking up three vital points in the fight for the Champions League places.

In a congested top half of the table, Madrid are now two points ahead of the Basques after Marta Cardona got the game’s only goal.

It was a tense start to proceedings on Sunday, with the two sides looking to figure one another out in a game that resembled a chess match.

Athletic looked to press high and use the speed of Lucia Garcia and Yulema Corres, though Madrid were good in possession and tried to involve Cardona and Sofia Jakobsson as much as possible in wide positions.

It was that very combination that opened the scoring for the hosts. The Swede’s run on the left ended with a cross for Cardona, who excellently finished in the middle.

Things did grow more intense as the game wore on, but the visitors couldn’t take the few chances that fell their way.

The win was Madrid’s fourth of the season so far and third at home, while Athletic have now lost back-to-back matches, having gone unbeaten until their sixth round of fixtures.
