Real Madrid have given away seven penalties this season, three more than last year

Real Madrid have already seen seven penalties whistled against them in the 25 games they have played so far this season, averaging one every 321 minutes of football, but why is the figure so high this season?

Last season Zinedine Zidane‘s team only gave away four penalties in 51 games, which was an average of one penalty every 1,132 minutes. However, handballs and shoulder to shoulders have been punished this season, to the extent that Real Madrid could break their previous record of 11 penalties conceded in a year, which was in the 2018/19 campaign.

The seventh penalty given against Los Blancos came against Athletic Club in the semi-final of the Supercopa de Espana, and the penalties previous to that came against Valencia, Elche, Villarreal and Alaves.

Since he joined Real Madrid in the summer of 2018, Thibaut Courtois has faced 18 penalties in total, of which he has saved just one.

In his career, Courtois has come up against 36 penalties and has saved just three, a poor record for such a high-profile goalkeeper.

Since Courtois began his career in 2011, the goalkeeper who has saved the most penalties in league matches is Bordeaux’s Benoit Costil, who has stopped 16 out of 53 penalties.

Across the five major leagues, only Montpellier, Nimes and Schalke have conceded more penalties than Real Madrid, all having given away nine.

Penalties awarded also doesn’t look great for Real Madrid after only receiving three all season, with 57 teams in the five major leagues ahead of Los Merengues.

AC Milan has been awarded the most in Europe with 12, whilst Barcelona have been awarded the most in Spain with 10.

Unfortunately for Real Madrid, every penalty they have conceded this season has been influential in the match. Against Valencia they lost 4-1, whilst both Elche’s and Villarreal’s penalties were equalisers.

Real Madrid have scored their last 28 penalties, with Sergio Ramos having a big influence in that remarkable statistic, but only one of the last 23 penalties whistled against them has been saved, something that Real Madrid may need to look at.
