Real Madrid – La Liga Zidane played all of his big guns
Real Madrid are lacking a ruthlessness in the final third. Their Copa del Rey disaster at Alcoyano showed that more than any other game this season.
It has been a problem since Cristiano Ronaldo‘s 2018 departure. He, meanwhile, keeps breaking goalscoring records at Juventus, where he has already scored 84 times.
Zinedine Zidane put all of his forwards on the pitch in Alcoy and the hosts ended the game with just 10 men. Mariano Diaz, Vinicius and Lucas Vazquez started, then came Karim Benzema, Marco Asensio and Eden Hazard. Despite six forwards making an appearance, the only goal was scored by defender Eder Militao.
But the latest setback didn’t come as much of a surprise, because Los Blancos have struggled for goals for quite some time now and the 2020/21 season is no exception.
Benzema aside, there is nobody who steps up in attack. The No.9 has 13 goals himself this season, while the rest of the forwards accumulate just nine.
Vinicius has three, Hazard and Lucas have two each, while Mariano and Asensio have each just scored one goal. They’re not hitting the standards expected of them.
Despite Benzema‘s best efforts, Real Madrid have been needing a clinical finisher since Ronaldo left the club. Gareth Bale was also an important contributor in the days of the BBC.
Real Madrid‘s goals have run dry. They’ve won just one of their last five games, and they’ve only scored more than one goal in that 2-0 win over Celta Vigo. In those five games, they’ve scored just five goals.
